Legend – Thinking versus Doing

A common theme I have found in trying to become more productive in all area’s of life is that sometimes we think we are making progress when we are thinking about the stuff we should be doing. In reality we aren’t taking action and nothing is getting done, even though we perceive progress because we mull it over in our brains.

I think this is wasted energy and time.

I want to develop a habit of when I start thinking about something that I should be doing (whether it be writing, working, working out, or approaching) that it becomes a trigger for me to take action to do what ever it is.  This will allow me to build habits of taking action.

That is the end goal.

Doing something rather then nothing.  Society has conditioned us to be very passive and lazy.  If we want to make the most progress quickly we have to undo that conditioning and actively put in place good habits.  It’s very difficult but this is a step in the right direction.

I find that a lot of time through out the week I think about specific goals I have and then afterward it feels like I’ve some how worked on them.  Its a very silly loop that can go on in our heads. The more I think about it and the more mental effort I put into it the more it seems like I have done something.  Really no progress has been made.  Nothing has been changed except my mental state.

If we think about approaching a girl we see and run the conversation in our minds sometimes I know I feel like I made progress.  This is completely false and in reality nothing happened.  I think its a way of our minds staying in our comfort zone and conserving energy.

I think its important to identify that this happens.  Then slowly we can use it as a trigger to take action.

I think this is very true, I often find myself doing this but at the same time I know I am not progressing, it is just in my head. It is amazing how when we just think about making progress we somehow think we are. My mental state feels good and like I can do anything but the action part is whats missing its a constant battle.

Yeah I agree Jesse.

Its a human condition. Mental masturbation. Always thinking about something and our brains confuse it with actually doing something. We all need to draw that distinction so we can monitor ourselves.
