Many people smile at everyone naturally, myself included. It doesn't mean they're interested, it just means they're being polite. Or they're in a good mood, or they're thinking about something great that happened to them earlier as they're talking to you (in which case it would actually be an indicator of being more interested in previous events than the conversation). I understand that these aren't meant to be paid attention to on their own (eg. JUST exposing her neck doesn't mean that she's suddenly interested if the other IOIs aren't there), but with smiling it's just completely out there - people smile. Some people smile at everyone. Same with laughing at what you're saying. If you're trying to be funny, polite people who are just trying to be nice are going to laugh whether or not they actually think that the joke is stupid.
